One Hundred per Cent

The next door neighbour barracks for Port Adelaide which is a shame as otherwise he is a sensible guy.And of course I am not sensible and barrack for Geelong. Our sides are 1st and 2nd on the ladder and were playing each other at Geelong so in a moment of weakness on Thursday I asked him if he wanted to go halves on the cost of the trip to Geelong to see the game as in spite of being a supporter he has (now) only seen 2 live games of AFL. He also in a moment of weakness (these moments are brought about by the effect of the sundowner home brews) agreed,so it was early on Sunday morning that we motored off to Geelong.

The day was fine and clear with not a breath of wind in sight but nonetheless we packed raincoats and took jackets. The jackets turned out to be handy to sit on as it was too hot to wear them and the rain coats were left in the boot. A pair of shorts would have been handier.

The game was a tight contest marred by heaps of clangers, that’s when you dispose of the ball under no pressure and send it straight into the opposition arms! There was plenty of pressure too and the scores were close all day until in the last minute Geelong unworthily hit the front. There was jubilation all around the ground which ended abruptly when Port won the ball in a scrimmage and sent a hasty kick goalwards. Despite the collective sigh of the faithful behind the goal halting the ball’s trajectory and sending it plummeting to earth the ball had crossed the goal line and sent Port back in front. The cheering that had been deafening then became a deafening silence as the ball was trotted back to the centre and bounced as the siren to end the game sounded!Joy for Some

I couldn’t say I was disappointed as the Libran in me acknowledged that Port and not Geelong deserved to win on the game, however there was disappointment that I had reneged on my decision to have $10 at $4 on Port winning. I even opened up the account with centrebet before changing my mind. Bummer. Len the neighbour was happy that his 100% record of seeing Port win had been maintained as so he should have been and we talked about other things on the way home as we were all footballed out.

The finals start in a couple of weeks and if Geelong end up having to play Port I am NOT taking Len along for the ride, not with that record
