Lost in the woods

The dogs and I went to Nangwarry on Saturday a lovely ride through the Pine breaks. Actually it is straight up the centre of a large break which has been made to cater for the large overhead power lines, as far as Nangwarry , about 10kms, and then a rightt turn across the main road and back home by a succession of smaller breaks in the plantations. It was a fine winter day and the dogs stayed with me unflaggingly so I enjoyed it. Inspired by this effort we went to Kalangadoo on the Sunday via a little used back track and then via dog legs back from the main Kalangadoo Nangwarry road to home. Again they were well behaved and it was a treat to ride with two fit hounds through the countryside.
Today, however, it was different. I took an exploratory route through the back blocks and got bushed but eventually found my way back to the gravel road which leads to Tarpeena. I was so pleased to find out where I was that I forgot about the dogs and in that moment they spied some kangaroos and took off. the bastards. No amount of calling would bring them back so after half an hour I thought bugger them let them sleep in the Pines tonight. I was about 6 kms from Tarps and more from the main road so I was sure they wouldn' t find their way back and I could return for them in the morning finding them chastened wet and hungry.
However a mate returning from work at Nangwarry saw them on the side of the main road and gave John a call( I was out riding my roadster bike and Nuran was out walking in the Pines looking for dogs). So John and Roxie headed off to fetch the dogs but they were not there and on returning home were just in time to get a call from the local dog pound ( Animal Welfare League) to say that they had just received Buddha and Banjo from a lady that had picked them up. A well meaning person that didn't have the heart to leave them on the side of the road watching the passing traffic. So the buggers were given a luxury ride back in the car and John said that Banjo looked chastened as he was let out of his cage but that Buddha had the expression of "I knew you would come for us".
Well next time I lose them it will be 30 kms from the main road and lets see if they can get a ride back from there. Yes folks the next ride is to Casterton, tomorrow, and if they still chase roos then lets see if they can eat them for supper instead of Nuran's fine dog palau.
Maybe they will stay close and with me this time.
